Unless you are going into some sort of specialized field that is computer intense, like auto cad, movie editing, graphics and such, you basically just want to get the best buy you can find. Your first search should be on the net, go to dell, gateway, hp and the rest of the places and find the best computer you can that will meet whatever your minimum requirements are, you did not give enough input for that but I would suggest at least a 15 wide screen, 512 ram, wireless access card and a P4 chip. That will run anything that you will need for basic studies. Most new computers come with preloaded software, make sure it has a good word processor in it, does not have to be the latest and greatest, but office 2000 or later. Then go around your town and see if anyone can match it, if they can, I prefer to purchase close to home, but if they cannot, buy it on line.

there are so many varieties to choose from, sony, toshiba, dell, hp, imac. it will just depend on what you are going to use it for, also your lifestyle, ive worked with a computer company back then and ive consulted a lot of people on choosing the best computer to get, i always ask them too on how much they are willing to dish out for a computer, because you cant really get what you want in a computer if you limit yourself to just a small budget, because one way or another, you will add on a new software new games for that matter since you said you into graduate studies i guess you are interested with online games too, which will actually take space and a strong memory for you to be able to play one (believe me there are alot of online games that will make you want some more,,) and of course the video card, sound card and since it is a notebook, warranty (just incase sh^t happens, some do offer top of the line service for a notebook like dell, and you wireless card since you’re going online most of the time..) anyway the more you add on to your notebook the heavier itll get even bigger, =) so for you it will really depend on what you want, i guess you want it light cause you will probably carry it around, so basically, i advice that you get one of the lightest which is sony they have 2.75lbs viao which is one of the lightest most reliable notebook around it costs around $2999.99, dell has 4lbs for the lightest notebook, toshiba has many choices and they have one of the thiniest hardware around same with sony though, hp are more business like although sometimes hps are slow, may depend on the component of the computer, acer has the ferrari series if into f1, it has a built in bluetooth and comes with the bluetooth mouse also, which other computer companies doent offer. i mac, i say im not really into macintosh technology, i believe microsoft is more up to date and easier to navigate through, =) then again, it will depend all on you, on what you’re used to and what you are going to use the computer for .. choose wisely! =) goodluck!

A good place for tips on how to do anything is. Just search for buying a laptop.
In my opinion, Dell makes great laptops for good prices. And from personal experience, I say to you DO NOT BUY A SONY VAIO!!!!
Hope this helps!

Unless you are going to need some specialized function, I would look at your university and see if they offer a discount price with certain vendors with them, or buy an off-lease laptop from one of several major sellers at Ebay. I have both sold and purchased from Ebay, and have never had any problems.
